2007 Philly Fighter of the Year Nominees
(Listed in Alphabetical Order)

Eddie Chambers
Weight Class: Heavyweight
Nickname: "Fast Eddie"
Why Nominated?
Fought three times in 2007 winning them all on the road, took a considerable step up in the level of his competition, and proved once and for all that he could compete outside of the Blue Horizon ring. Eddie beat Calvin Brock in first step of an IBF elimination tourney putting him one win away from a title shot.
2007 Accomplishments:
02/09/07 - Selden, NY:
Chambers TKO7 Derric Rossy
05/04/07 - Las Vegas:
Chambers W10 (U) Dominic Guinn
11/02/07 - Tacoma:
Chambers W12 (S) Calvin Brock

Steve Cunningham
Weight Class: Cruiserweight
Nickname: "USS Cunningham"
Why Nominated?
Returned to Poland to take the IBF 200-pound championship in a rematch with Krzysztof Wlodarczyz, beating him by a large enough margin to avoid another robbery. Also emphatically defended his crown in hostile territory against Marco Huck. Hometown heroes beware.
2007 Accomplishments:
05/26/07 - Katowice, Poland:
Cunningham W12 (M) Krzysztof Wlodarczyz (Won title)
12/29/07 - Bielefield, Germany:
Cunningham TKO12 Marco Huck (Defended title)

Bernard Hopkins
Weight Class: Light-Heavyweight
Nickname: "The Executioner"
Why Nominated?
Although he only fought once in 2007, Hopkins made it count. He defended his Ring Magazine 175-pound championship and once again defied father time and the betting odds by topping Winky Wright, a foe who probably should have beaten him.  Not only did he beat Wright the spoiler, but actually looked good doing it.
2007 Accomplishments:
07/21/07 - Las Vegas:
Hopkins W12 (U) Winky Wright (Defended title)

Mike Jones
Weight Class: Welterweight
Nickname: "Machine Gun"
Why Nominated?
Solidified his place as Philly's most exciting prospect with seven wins - all by knockout - and ran his record to 12-0 with 12 KOs. Stepped up the class of his opposition when he faced Pito Cardona & Doel Carrasquillo. He passed both tests with flying colors, managed to keep his KO streak in place, and fought his way to the brink of contender status.
2007 Accomplishments:
01/15/07 - Airway Heights, WA:
Jones TKO3 Donnie Fosmire
03/02/07 - Philadelphia:
Jones KO2 Francisco Maldonado
05/04/07 - Las Vegas:
Jones TKO1 Gilbert Guevara
07/20/07 - Philadelphia:
Jones TKO3 Doel Carrasquillo
08/31/07 - Niagara Falls:
Jones KO5 Martinus Clay
10/05/07 - Philadelphia:
Jones TKO1 Richard Hall
11/09/07 - Philadelphia:
Jones TKO3 Israel Cardona

2007 Philly Fight of the Year Nominees
(Listed in Date Order)

  Joshua Onyango
W6 (U)
Gabriel Rosado

Date: Mar. 23, 2007
Site: National Guard Armory
Promoter: Power Productions
Weight Class: Jr. Middleweight
Context: 6-round Main Event
Why Nominated?
Kenyan Onyango came to town and  surprised the green but upcoming "King

Gabriel" with skill that belied his below .500 record. Rosado was cut, hurt and taken to school, but he also showed real grit by fighting back for a chance to let his power get him out of trouble. Both fighters waged war for six  full rounds but Onyango had too  much firepower and accuracy for the gutsy Rosado. The see-saw battle with numerous thrills went to the cards and Onyango got a wide margin win. The pair would rematch one year later in New York.

  Bronco McKart
W12 (S)
Enrique Ornelas

Date: Aug. 10, 2007
Site: New Alhambra
Promoter: Peltz / Hand / Golden Boy
Weight Class: Middleweight
Context: 12-rd Main Event / NABF Title
Why Nominated?
McKart returned to Philly after a 10-year absence to win the vacant NABF crown in an all-action battle. McKart stared strong

and dropped Ornelas in the third round, but Ornelas surged in the middle rounds to pull the fight even. Both fighters put up impressive punch output numbers as the grueling fight wore on. With the outcome on the line, McKart  closed the show and gained a narrow points win and took the North American title in the process. Round nine was especially good. The fight spawned a rematch four months later in Las Vegas.

  Richard Stewart
D8 (S)
Jameel Wilson

Date: Oct. 19, 2007
Site: Wachovia Spectrum
Promoter:
Power Productions
Weight Class: Light Heavyweight
Context: 8-round Main Event
Why Nominated?
Substitute Wilson fought far above expectations and matched Stewart punch

for punch in an entertaining - and these days rare - Spectrum struggle. Stewart was the aggressor and mounted a nasty body attack while Wilson landed crisp combinations to the head. Both fighters were rocked several times, and a KO seemed within reach for either man throughout this war. But neither gave an inch and in the end, the tough battle was judged dead even. An anticipated rematch has yet to happen.

  Lenny DeVictoria
TKO6
Elad Shmouel

Date: Dec. 7, 2007
Site: Blue Horizon
Promoter: Blue Horizon Boxing
Weight Class: Jr. Welterweight
Context: 8-round Main Event
Why Nominated?
Shmouel had made a few splashy starts at the Blue Horizon and was building a nice fan base a long way from his home in Israel as 2007 drew to a close. Enter sub

.500 Philly clubber DeVictoria who appeared to be nothing more than an opponent for the new young star in the making. Shmouel stuck to the script by jumping out to an early lead and flooring DeVictoria. The second round knockdown seemed to foreshadow an eventual victory for Elad. But Lenny climbed off the floor and staged a gutsy comeback that left Shmouel and the crowd in shock. It was a tough toe-to-toe war fought at extremely close quarters. Lenny won the fight of his life with a breathtaking and savage sixth round stoppage.
