Most of the original Philly boxing gyms are long gone now, but these renowned pain palaces are an important piece of the city's fight history. Gyms sprouted up all over - in North Philly, South Philly, West Philly. And when it was time to fight, the talented stables of boxers developed in these gyms carried their pride and local honor into the ring with them. The result was an ongoing series of inter-city rivalries that helped to shape the very history of boxing in Philadelphia. In addition, great rivalries emerged within each gym, as fighters clamored to reach the top of their own neighborhood mountain. The resulting gym wars became as legendary as the official bouts of record. It has been said that Philly fighters cared more for their gym status than they did their world ranking. This section of the Website explores this critical component of Philly Boxing History. As this section develops, it will include all the key info about each gym and compile the great stories, the cast of characters, the chronology, the rivalries and the geography of the great Philadelphia boxing gyms. |
