Recap:
Danny Garcia spent 2015 transitioning to the welterweight division. First he fought
Lamont Peterson at 143 pounds. This was the fight that everyone wanted to
see at junior welter, but we had to settle for it being a non-title bout. Garcia
won a close 12-round decision. Next Garcia finally jumped all the way to
147 to face a faded but still cagey Paulie Malignaggi. Garcia dominated Paulie
and stopped him in nine rounds to set himself up for a title bout in 2016.

D10 Nicholas Walters (26-0 / 21 KO) - Verona, NY, Dec. 19, 2015

Recap:
Jason Sosa continued racking up knockouts for the majority of 2015. His
first five fights of the year extended his consecutive KO streak to 13 in a row.
One of those KOs was a quickie against Jerry Belmontes. In December, Sosa faced undefeated junior lightweight champion Nicholas Walters in a non-title
bout. Most believed Sosa would get knocked out by the dangerous Jamaican. However, Sosa not only lasted the full 10 rounds, he fought Walters to a draw. Most disputed the decision, but Sosa proved that he belonged with the best.

2015 PHILLY FIGHT OF THE YEAR
NOMINATIONS

NOMINATION #1

MICHAEL PEREZ W10 MIGUEL ACOSTA
21-1-2 / 9 KO                29-7-2 / 23 KO

January 20, 2015 - 2300 Arena
10-Round Co-Feature

Promoters: Golden Boy & Joe Hand Promotions

THE FIGHT: Newark, NJ junior welterweight Michael Perez got off to a slow start against Philly-based Venezuelan Miguel Acosta, but battled back to win the high-action brawl. In the first few rounds, Acosta landed the cleaner shots and had Perez nicked and bleeding from his left eye. Early on, it appeared that Acosta was on the brink of an upset. However beginning in round five, Perez buckled down and forced a change of momentum in the lively fight. He hurt Acosta in the fifth and continued to surge in the second half. Late in the bout, Acosta threatened to shift the momentum with a good body attack, but Perez dropped him in round seven and controlled the fight until the final bell. Perez won the unanimous decision, but it was a bloody and exciting battle all the way to the finish.

NOMINATION #2

AMIR MANSOUR W10 JOEY DAWEJKO
21-1 / 16 KO                    14-3-2 / 7 KO

May 08, 2015 - 2300 Arena
10 Round Main Event

Promoters: Peltz Boxing, BAM Boxing, Joe Hand Promotions

THE FIGHT: After the best pre-fight build up in recent years (months of bad blood, trash talk, mind games, & facial hair disputes), heavyweight Amir Mansour defeated Joey Dawejko via 10-round unanimous decision to win the PA State Heavyweight Title. Before a big crowd at the 2300 Arena and an ESPN2 national TV audience, Mansour took the unanimous decision, but it wasn't easy. Dawejko spent most of the fight's first half out-foxing a tight Mansour. By round three, both fighters were bleeding from cut eyes. In round four, Dawejko buckled Mansour's knees with a looping right. However beginning in the second half, Mansour's better conditioning started to pay off. As Dawejko tired, a more relaxed Mansour surged. Mansour hurt Joey in the final round and took the decision on all three cards. It was the event of the year, and the fight itself was nearly as good.

NOMINATION #3

VYACHESLAV SHABRANSKYY TKO3 PAUL PARKER

13-0 / 11 KO                                         7-0 / 4 KO

June 30, 2015 - 2300 Arena
10-Round Main Event

Promoters:  Golden Boy & Joe Hand Promotions

THE FIGHT: Cruiserweight Vyacheslav Shabranskyy battled back from the brink of disaster to stop Paul Parker in the scheduled 10-round main event at the 2300 Arena in South Philly. The LA-based puncher pulled himself off the floor twice in round one and averted a big upset by somehow surviving the round. Parker pounded away but ran out of time in the opening round. After that, Parker's window closed quickly and Shabranskyy took control of the fight. Parker tired badly and couldn't lay a glove on Shabranskyy beginning in round two. In round three Shabranskyy's power punches started taking their toll, and it became obvious that the end was near. With Parker huffing and puffing, Shabranskyy battered away at the fading fighter. Suddenly a sharp right hurt Parker and a combination sent him to the ropes. Shabranskyy landed rights and lefts as Parker twisted and tried to survive. Shabranskyy punctuated his combo with a hard right to the head. Parker turned his back and hung over the ropes. Referee Gary Rosato jumped in to save Parker at 2:36 of round three. The fight was a thrilling rollercoaster.
