MATTHEWS TKOs LANCASTER

West Philly's Len Matthews won a technical knockout victory in two rounds over Ray Lancaster, on this day in 1959.

This was a key outing for Matthews, as it followed his first-ever losing effort (L10 Paul Armstead). The pressure was on him to make a good showing and to return to his normally winning ways. Increasing the drama was the fact that Lancaster had held Matthews to a draw in a prior bout.

But in this return meeting, it was all Lenny.  He jumped out at the first bell throwing a storm of punches at his foe.  Lancaster took them pretty well at first, but by the second round, Matthews' shots were just too hard and too frequent. The end came at 2:23 of  round two, when referee Joe Sweeney stepped in. 6,930 fans paid $23,516 to attend the Convention Hall event.
