GIARDELLO TO ENTER PHILADELPHIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame announced Wednesday (7/15) that former middleweight champion Joey Giardello will be among the inductees of their sixth annual class. Giardello becomes only the third boxer ever to be honored by the group. Joe Frazier was in the initial class and Tommy Loughran was elected last year. Joey's widow, Rosalie Tilelli, represented Giardello and spoke on his behalf at the announcement press conference, which was held at the Wachovia Spectrum. Also in attendance Wednesday were one of Joey's sons, Paul Tilelli, and Tilelli's son Carmine. PA Boxing Hall of Fame Chairman, John Gallagher, was also on hand.

The official induction will take place in a gala banquet held Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Penn's Landing. Other members of the induction class will be Larry Bowa (baseball), John Cappelletti (football), Eddie Collins (baseball), Bill Conlin (sports writing), Charlie Jenkins (track & field), Judy Johnson (baseball), Neil Johnson (basketball), Tommy Lasorda (baseball), Merrill Reese (broadcasting), Pete Retzlaff (football), Betty Shellenberger (field hockey & lacrosse), Mel Sheppard (track & field), Emlen Tunnell (football), and the 1974-75 Philadelphia Flyers Team (hockey).
