PATTERSON STOPS RUSSELL AT ARENA

Former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson continued his comeback on this day in 1971, making his only career-appearance in Philadelphia. Patterson took on Roger Russell in a scheduled ten rounder before an Arena crowd of 5,812. Floyd won the fight going away and ultimately scored a TKO at 1:29 of round nine when referee Zack Clayton stepped in to save Russell's swollen left eye from further punishment. However, Floyd experienced some difficult moments when the light-punching South Philadelphian landed punches that hurt the former champ on more than one occasion. Patterson survived to land hard shots of his own and pile up a ton of points, but had a few tense moments along the way.

The victory for Floyd was his third straight. His streak would run another six bouts before finally ending in his last career bout - a loss to Muhammad Ali in 1972. For Russell it was his eighth consecutive loss over a three-year stretch and occurred in the final chapter of his ring days which ended for good in 1978.
