PARKER BEATS BRAXTON AT RESORTS

Middleweight standout Curtis Parker nabbed a 10-round majority decision over Tony Braxton in their nationally televised main event from Resorts International Hotel Casino in Atlantic City on this day in 1983. The win helped Parker in his quest to rebuild his record and reposition himself as a top contender. The once undefeated prospect had suffered four losses in the previous two years and saw his chances of gaining a title shot begin to slip away. To complicate matters, Parker had fired himself as manager and started a round-robin of trainers, adding to the confusion and lack of focus in that difficult period of his career. But with Milt Bailey installed as his "permanent" trainer and Bill Grambel as manager, Parker turned to the task at hand - fighting.

He looked pretty good in this his third consecutive victory. But it was a close match. At times Parker looked renewed, boxing, moving his head effectively, and of course, always moving forward. But then his defensive flaws would surface, allowing Braxton to pepper him with shots. Still in the end, Parker came away with the win. One judge, Frank Brunette scored it 5-5 in rounds. But the other two officials had Parker comfortably ahead. Bob Kimborough had it 8-2 and Milo Savage scored it 6-3-1.

Parker would continue to win and rebuild until he ran into John Mugabi late that same year.
