STREAKING TURNER STILL UNBEATEN, 28-0

Gil Turner pushed his record to 28-0 (23 KOs) with a 4th round TKO of  Sammy Mastrean at the Philadelphia Arena on this day in 1952. The bout was the headliner of the annual Deborah Hospital Benefit Show. Both Turner and Mastrean were all-action windmills, but Gil was in a different class. The undefeated 21 year old prospect took Mastrean's bombs and fired back with his own. Turner had his opponent nearly out in round two, dropping him face-down with a hard right hand. But the tough club fighter from Pittsburgh somehow

weathered it and lasted two more sessions. At 2:49 of the 4th, with Mastrean refusing to go down under a brutal Turner attack, referee Charley Daggert stepped in to stop the fight. A crowd of 7,038 (mostly Turner) fans watched as the Turner train continued to move on. The win moved Gil one step closer to a shot at the World Welterweight Championship held by Kid Gavilan. That big chance would come in July, after three more victories.
